It is Suicidal To Reopen Universities Now — ASUU Warns FG

  • In what appears to be a backbone statement to the one earlier made by ASUU Calabar Zone today, The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Lagos Zone has also warned the Federal Government to shelve its plans to reopen tertiary institutions shut due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic or be ready to face negative consequences.

The Coordinator, ASUU, Lagos Zone, Prof Olusiji Sowande, gave the warning today at a press conference after a meeting held at Olabisi Onababjo University, Ago-Iwoye.

According to him, Public Universities across the country are not just prepared yet for Reopening.

He said that reopening of tertiary institutions without taking concrete steps to address issues within the universities would be suicidal.

PTF SPEAKS ON REOPENING OF TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS ,OTHERS.

The Presidential Task Force on Covid-19 has advised states planning to fully reopen schools including tertiary institutions to be guided by the experiences of countries like the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and France,The PUNCH reports.

The PTF said it was not against the preparations by some states to fully reopen schools.

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, said on August 29 that primary and secondary schools in the state would fully reopen from September 21, 2020, while tertiary institutions in the state would also reopen from September 14, 2020

Speaking during a PTF briefing in Abuja on Monday, the PTF Chairman and Secretary to the Government of Federation, Boss Mustapha, said, “The Presidential Task Force appreciates ongoing calls for the reopening of the education sector. And indeed, some sub-nationals are already making preparations for such.

“Whilst the PTF does not discourage such preparations, we need to be guided by experiences from countries such as Germany, France, the US, and the UK where the opening of schools in some cities led to confirmed cases and fatalities.”
