TWO LASU 500L MEDICAL STUDENT’S, DAWODU AND SOYEMI BAG INTERNATIONAL AWARD

Two 5th year medical students of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), Dawodu Oluwananumi and Soyemi Toluwalashe, have bagged the Global Changemakers Award 2021 from far away Dahkar, Bangladesh.

The Young Global Changemakers Award- 2021, was introduced by YEF Global to celebrate young individuals who inspire change through tangible action for the Sustainable Development Goals.

Dawodu Oluwananumi and Soyemi Toluwalashe of Lagos State University, Nigeria were recognized in the Rising Impact Maker category for their work promoting SDG 3 under the Sustainable Development Goal-3.

A total of 17 Young Changemakers from 14 countries were recognized this year for acting as positive change catalyst in their local community and for their outstanding contributions towards advancing the 2030 agenda and the SDGs.

The 2021 YGC Award attracted more than five hundred nominees from over 47 countries around the world.

Dawodu’s award was inspired by his effort to curb the spread of the Hepatitis B Virus, which saw him launch the ‘End Hepatitis’ project. The project has helped over 1,500 people get screened and vaccinated against Hepatitis B.

On his part, Soyemi was awarded for his effort at raising awareness about mental illness in Nigeria.

He is the Co-Founder of Protostar Initiative; a youth-led organization with a vision of providing access to information, resources and support to youths and teenagers. In the past four years, he has led teams to organize mental health conferences, workshops, community outreaches and awareness tours to under-privileged communities and other secondary schools and reached out to more than 3,000 people in Nigeria.

“These young awardees show how youths are leading the way and coming up with innovative solutions needed to rebuild our communities and nations,” said Hania Tabet, Head of Sustainability Engagement & Community Impact of Airbus while congratulating the awardees.

Due to the current pandemic situation the award conferment ceremony took place over online.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, mni congratulates the awardees on their international recognition and urges them to keep the flag of excellence flying as they continue to bring glory to themselves and the institution.
