NUC Upgrades Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, Optometry to Doctoral Status

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has introduced a significant upgrade to some medical-related programs in Nigerian universities, transforming Pharmacy, Physiotherapy, and Optometry from bachelor’s degree programs to doctoral status, The Positive Voice has gathered.

According to a statement issued in Abuja by Mrs. Franca Elochi Chukwuonwo, Acting Director of Public Affairs for the NUC, the decision was driven by the need to align these programs with global best practices. This reform is expected to improve clinical training, expand foundational courses, and equip students with specialized skills to meet international standards.

The Positive Voice further reports that the duration of the affected programs has been extended from five to six years to accommodate additional coursework and intensive clinical training. This extension aims to ensure graduates are better prepared for professional practice and global competitiveness in their respective fields.
