NUC INITIATES REACCREDITATION PROCESS FOR LASUCOM MBBS AND BDS PROGRAMMES
…Entry visit also holds for Botany programme
A significant exercise in the pursuit of the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) consistently producing world class graduates in health sciences unfolded today as the National Universities Commission (NUC) commenced it’s thorough reaccreditation exercise for the College’s prestigious MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) and BDS (Bachelor of Dental Surgery) programmes.
The reaccreditation exercise kicked off with the reception of the NUC Team by the Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello (mni,NPOM), the Deputy Vice Chancellors of Academics & Administration, Prof. Omobitan Olufunsho and Prof. Adenike Boyo alongside the Provost of the College Professor Abiodun Adewuya and other principal officers and top management staff of both the University and the College at the FBCS/FBMS Auditorium.
In similar vein, the Vice Chancellor and her team also received the NUC accreditation team for the Botany programme at the College before the team proceeded to the main campus, Ojo, for it’s exercise.
The Vice Chancellor, in her opening address, welcomed the team to the University and the College and echoed the “great repute” of the University and the College’s 25-year journey to becoming the best Medical School in the nation.
“We are confidently hopeful on the strength of our preparations and available facilities that this accreditation exercise will be successful” she stated while assuring the NUC team of the staff and students’ readiness to cooperate with them before handing each faction of the team to their respective Deans of faculties and programme heads.
The Provost of the College, Prof. Abiodun Adewuya, expressed his gratitude for the NUC’s visit and their commitment to continuous improvement. Prof. Adewuya said, “We are pleased to host the NUC team and appreciate their efforts in ensuring the quality and standards of medical and dental education in our institution. We are fully committed to not just meeting but also exceeding their expectations.”
Following the reception and before swinging into action, the MBBS and Dentistry teams took a detour to pay a courtesy call to the Chief Medical Director of the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo who received them with gusto and proudly touted the exponential growth of the institutions and the admirably “symbiotic” relationship between the College and the Hospital.
During the reception with the Vice Chancellor and meeting with the Chief Medical Director, the NUC team representatives, expressed satisfaction with the standards maintained by the College and the Teaching Hospital having paid previous understudying visits beforehand. An NUC official noted, “I have been thoroughly impressed by the commitment of the Teaching Hospital and the College to uphold the highest quality of medical and dental education.”
“This visit is a not a witch-hunt process but a feedback mechanism to maintain the standards in our universities and to ensure learning and teaching continues to keep up with the global standard” another stated.
The NUC reaccreditation team, comprising experts in medical education and assessment, began their evaluation by scrutinizing the college’s infrastructure, faculty qualifications, and facilities. The visit also included interactions with students, faculty, and administrative staff to gain insights into the overall functioning of the institution.
