LAUTECH bans final-year sign out celebration

The management of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso has banned final-year students from engaging in sign out celebrations, popularly referred to as log out by students.

The Public Relations Officer of the university, Lekan Fadeyi, confirmed this to our correspondent on the telephone on Tuesday.

He noted that the decision was taken at a management meeting held Wednesday, March 24, 2021.

He alleged that the programme promotes gross immoralities and indiscipline.

Fadeyi said, “It is true that the management has banned what the students call sign out. The event has always been full of indiscipline activities. That is why the management in its wisdom said rather than have our students misbehave during that activity that is not officially recognised, that we should better put a stop to it officially.

“The management had its meeting on March 24 and the decision was reached.

“It is not to erode the joy that comes with graduating successfully. I think such joy should come with events such as convocation, which is recognised worldwide. When you say you are signing out and use that as a smokescreen to attend gatherings that have not been officially sanctioned, I do not think that there is any joy that you can derive from that.”

Earlier, the management of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, had banned End-of-Examination celebration on its campuses with immediate effect, to forestall break down of law and order in the institution.

Dr Salisu Ogbo Usman, Rector of the polytechnic, who disclosed this in a statement on Sunday in Lokoja, said the management’s decision was prompted by information about planned violent cult activities under the guise of celebration.

Usman said that the ban was not an attempt to cut short the joy of law-abiding students of the institution who had every reason to mark an important milestone in their lives.
