The Medical and Dental Consultants of Nigeria (MDCAN) at Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) Chapter, said they did not join the strike embarked by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) was to save Nigeria’s healthcare from total collapse.
The medical lecturers noted that the country is facing setious brain drain in history as the current ratio of doctor to patient is 1:10,000 as against the recommended 1:600, in addition that any disruption in medical training will exacerbate the already shortage of medical doctors within the West African region.
Dr. B. Jibrin, the Chairman of the union at UDUTH, and D. I.G Ango, the Secretary, in a statement signed by them noted this.
They said when the strike was embarked in February 2022, medical students at UDUS were in the final stages of their postings and preparing for their exams.
The posting was briefly hindered by the strike.
Due to the understanding of the university, peculiarities of medical education and practice as well as the belief of medical lecturers that this sector is critical and cannot afford to be disrupted. The college of health science was encouraged to go on with postings and examinations for students.
