ASUU GETS NEW PRESIDENT

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Professor Chris Piwuna as its new national president. Piwuna is a consultant psychiatrist at the University of Jos Teaching Hospital and currently serves as the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos.

He takes over from Professor Victor Osodeke, a soil science expert from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State.

The election took place on Sunday during ASUU’s 23rd National Delegates Congress held in Benin City. Piwuna won the vote after contesting against Professor Adamu Babayo from Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi, according to sources familiar with the congress.

His emergence as ASUU’s leader comes at a time when there are growing concerns in the university system. Talks of a possible strike are brewing due to unresolved issues, including how the Federal Government recently distributed Earned Academic Allowances. Other ongoing concerns include the rising trend of brain drain and general challenges facing public universities across the country.
