Congress was called to order at 11.32am. Chairman welcomed members to the congress. He announced a saddened demise of Professor Bamidele Faleye of the Department of Educational Foundations and Counselling who died on Saturday, 15th October, 2022. Congress observed a minute silence in his honour and was led in prayer sessions. Professor Abel Afon led prayer in Christian way while Dr. Saheed Adekilekun led the prayer in Islamic way. Apologies for absence were noted. Congress noted the public notice inviting members of the university community to Health Awareness and Screening that would run from Wednesday, 19 to Friday 21, October 2022 at the Health Centre Annex, along Road 7. Members were also notified of Special Health Management Training to be organized by Lifestyle Medicine Centre which would hold on 28th October, 2022. Members were encouraged to be part of these programmes.
Report from NEC for NEC: Chairman gave a report of the NEC for NEC meeting that held on Wednesday/Thursday. 12/13.10.2022. Main highlight of the report was the suspension of the eight (8) months old strike action embarked upon by the union to press home demands for decent work environment and better welfare package for its members. Congress noted the actions of the Minister of Labour to ensure proscription of ASUU, which eventually amounted to nullity. Congress also noted that the strike was suspended in obedience to the Court of Appeal order. Congress also noted and commended the resoluteness and doggedness of the Principal Officers of the union during the period of the struggle.
AoB: Local Strike: NEC has approved the suspension of ASUU OAU local strike that was declared on 31st January, 2022 to demand for the payment of the EAA from the previous University Administration, Congress noted the need to consider the plight of our members, respect the interest of our students and the need to honor the new Vice Chancellor.
Election NEC has approved November 16, 2022 as election date for ASUU OAU.
Resolution: Congress resolved to uphold the suspension of both the national and local strike actions as directed by NEC. The suspension of the strikes was officially pronounced at the ASUU OAU Congress held on Monday, 17th October 2022 at exactly 12:27pm. Congress rose at about 12.28pm
