Students of Ogun State Polytechnic have been outraged by the school’s new innovation before the commencement of the semester’s examination.

The school mandated that all students must have the school’s branded key holder before they can be allowed to write the exams.

The question now is Since when has a branded key holder been a requirement for for students to write an examination aside school fee?

Students on a daily basis complain of how they’re paying for every rooster and bullshit everyday in the school.

Now the school branded key holder has been made mandatory requirement for students to get their examination pass so as to write their exam next week Aug 2nd.

A pathologist at the University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital, Dr Kayode Adeniyi, on Tuesday told a Kwara State High Court sitting in Ilorin that the autopsy test conducted on the raped and murdered student of the University of Ilorin, Omowumi Olajide, revealed the possibility that she was strangled.

Adeniyi, who was the eighth witness in the ongoing trial of the eight suspects facing trial in connection with the murder of Omowuni, said when her body was dissected, the kidney was whitish as a result of lack of oxygen to breath.

He said a material, which could be a rope, was used to tie the hands of the victim.

“The report shows that her right side eye was swollen with the tongue showing patches of injuries.

There were bruises around her private parts and there were signs of penetration, with deposits of smear inside her organ, which suggested the possibility that she was raped.

“The right side of her teeth was broken, and there was clotted blood on her scalp, which suggests that she must have wrestled for life and sustained injuries in the process,” he added.

Adeniyi explained that he took photographs with his Infinix phone in the course of performing the medical examination, which he printed out as evidence.

The autopsy report and the photographs were admitted by the court as exhibits.

Earlier, another prosecution witness, Dr Dupe Shittu, revealed to the court how the first defendant, Abdulazeez Ismail, stole her son’s bicycle sometime in 2017.

Shittu said she identified Ismail immediately he was brought out at the Department of State Services office in Ilorin, where she was invited to over the incident

The witness, who claimed the deceased was her second cousin, narrated how she made frantic efforts to reach her on the phone after transferring N20,000 into her account for her to buy consumables on the day she was gruesomely murdered

The first three suspects are standing trial for alleged rape and murder of the 24-year-old student, while the other five are standing trial for alleged receipt of stolen items

The trial judge, Justice Ibrahim Yusuf, adjourned the case till Tuesday, August 3, 2021 for continuation of hearing.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday secured the conviction of Abubakar Abdulbashit Opeyemi, a final year Student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN).

Two other undergraduates charged with offences bordering on love scam and internet fraud were sentenced.

They are Alimi Abiodun and Idowu Rasaq Olarewaju, students of Kwara State University (KWASU) in Molete, and Kwara State Polytechnic in Ilorin.

Justice Mahmood Abdulgafar of the Kwara State High Court, Ilorin, slammed jail terms after finding them guilty of various offences brought by the EFCC.

The trio, arraigned on separate charges, pleaded guilty to the charges.

Relying on their plea and exhibits tendered, Justice Abdulgafar held that the prosecution proved its case beyond reasonable doubts.

Abdulbashit Opeyemi was sentenced to six months imprisonment, which shall be suspended for one year.

Abiodun will forfeit his iPhone and N352,000 raised as restitution to the Federal Government.

For Idowu, Justice Abdulgafar sentenced him to six months imprisonment, which shall be suspended for six months.

Similarly, Idowu will forfeit a 2014 Toyota Venza, 2 iPhones, HP Laptop, and N404, 414 in his First Bank account to the Federal Government.

The judge concluded by saying, “The sentences are without option of fine”.

Osodeke said the union had been proved right in its opposition to the IPPIS. He said in June, a number of lecturers in Nigerian universities received different salaries.

But Gong, in the interview with The PUNCH, challenged the union to be more specific in its allegations that government had violated agreements.

He said the ministry was preparing an official letter to seek clarifications from ASUU over its recent pronouncements.

Gong stated, “Let them (ASUU) be specific on their accusations. Let them state the parts of the agreements which have not been met.

“Let them also mention the ministries responsible for not meeting the agreements.

“For example, if we say we want to pay them this amount of money, is it not the ministry of finance who will do the payment?

“For the UTAS platform, there is no provision on that platform for tax deduction. How do you pay someone’s salary without tax deductions? Let them list their issues.

“When we saw the publications (by ASUU). We wrote to the permanent secretary to notify him of the allegations by ASUU and we pleaded with him to tell the Chairman (Executive Secretary) of the National Universities Commission to launch an inquiry.”

Besides the issue of payment, ASUU also accused the Federal Government of appointing non-graduates into the governing boards of universities.

Responding to this, Gong stated, “The permanent secretary has directed that a letter be written to ASUU. This was what the permanent secretary said, ‘Write to the ASUU president to indicate those he claimed are not graduates among the members of governing council for further investigations.’ I am already writing the publication.”

ASUU, a few day ago, issued a fresh strike notice to push for the payment of outstanding allowances and adoption of UTAS for the payment of lecturers’ salaries, instead of the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

Recall that in March 2020, ASUU embarked on a strike following its disagreement with the Federal Government over the funding of the universities and implementation of the IPPIS.

ASUU, however, developed UTAS and had several meetings with the ministries of Finance, Education, Labour and Employment, and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.

Government agreed to pay outstanding salaries to the university lecturers and resolve all other issues which ASUU raised.

Before calling off its strike last year, ASUU insisted that its members would not register the IPPIS.

In response, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, said the UTAS platform would first be subjected to an integrity test.

Responding to Gong’s statement, ASUU insisted that none of the agreement it reached with the Federal Government had have been implemented.

Speaking in an interview with The PUNCH on Tuesday, the President of ASUU, Osodeke, maintained that the Memorandum of Understanding which was signed with the Federal Government in December 2020, had not been implemented.

Osodeke denied the allegations which Gong made against UTAS and the other issues he raised.

They all have a copy of the MoU we signed in December.

They know that UTAS, which is the major one has not been implemented. The revitalisation fund has not been released. They agreed that they would mainstream our earned academic allowances into the salary system in 2021. We are in August already and preparing 2022 budget, yet nothing has been done. They said by December they would pay the backlog they are owing our members and till now they have not paid a number of them.

A former Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, Prof. Sebastian Maimako on Sunday said he had no regrets serving the institution for five years.

Maimako, who ended his five year non-renewable tenure last month stated this in an interview with The PUNCH on Sunday after a thanksgiving service, which was held at the St Mary Catholic Church, Lu’ukwo in Quaaapan Local Government Area of Plateau State to mark the completion of his tenure.

Maimako said, “I have taken my exit as VC and I am celebrating the mercy of God. I am grateful to God because the last five years of my tenure as UNIJOS VC have been very eventful and impactful .

Though there were challenges, It was God that helped us to achieve all the things we were able to achieve despite the challenges.

“I can tell you I have no regrets serving as UNIJOS VC and my desire is that my successor would build on the legacies we left behind so as to take the university to greater heights.”

He noted that under Maimako’s leadership as the 9th VC of UNIJOS, so much was achieved in research, teaching, infrastructural development, campus harmony and breakthroughs in academic grants.

Lalong said the testimony of both staff, students, regulatory bodies and many who have had contact with the institution during his stewardship affirmed that he was prudent, transparent, fair, kind and just.

“If the former VC has not done well, we won’t be here to celebrate with him. It is the kind of courage he exhibited while in office that we need to get things done as leaders,” he said.

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has said it will be using biometrics as well as Item Differential Profile (IDP) to tackle problem of examination malpractices in the forth coming 2021 WASSCE exams scheduled to commence next month.

The head of WAEC Public Affairs Unit, Mr. Demianus Ojijeogu, said the examination body has put some measures in place to combat exam malpractices in the upcoming exams that would be conducted in over 20,000 schools across the country.

Ojijeogu pointed out that if WAEC is to conduct an examination devoid of malpractices there must be collaborative efforts of all stakeholders.

According to him, the biometrics collected at the point of registration for the exam will be used to confirm the identity of students before entering the examination halls to ensure that mercenaries do not invade the examination halls to help students write their examination.

“Some schools have already perfected plans and means on how to help the students cheat during the exams, students in turn also have different ways of bringing illegal materials into the exam halls and some supervisors will connive with teachers and schools since they have the keys to access the examination questions they could then decide to meet at a rendezvous point and these are all aiding malpractice in the exams.

WAEC doesn’t have the staff to cover all schools nationwide, so it relies on supervisors who are not WAEC staff but teachers nominated by the ministry of education in the states and sent to WAEC to be used as a supervisor. We rely on them to confirm the identity of registered students, make sure students going into the examination don’t carry materials or phones and also to refuse any form of assistance from the teachers to the students.
